Job Description
Establishes the general areas and expectations the contracted Shelter Assistant will routinely work within at Genesis Joy House. (Females Only) - A variety of shifts available for 24/7 monitoring.
  • Respond to crisis and inquiry telephone calls by providing support, information and referrals to other appropriate social service agencies.
  • Provide assistance to shelter residents to ensure a safe environment including compliance with rules and policies.
  • Conduct periodic walking inspections of all areas of the facility, for the purpose of identifying and initiating appropriate action (correction, reporting, etc.) of hazards, inappropriate behavior, needed repairs or other notable condition.
  • Respond to emergency situations that may arise, making independent decisions within policy guidelines, as necessary.
  • Provide crisis intervention and institute security procedures should a critical or threatening situation arise.  Provide timely and appropriate notification to police, fire, emergency medical and supervisory authorities.
  • Implements all program safety procedures
  • Supervise and support volunteer program staff that come on site to teach classes
  • Backup to House Manager that may require an overnight stay (will be rotated)
  • On call rotation 24 hours a day for emergencies/staff support and guidance
  • Assist with the orientation and training of new staff, volunteers and interns.
  • Work cooperatively with other Genesis staff and programs.
  • Represent Genesis programs to other community agencies and representatives in a respectful and positive manner.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Comply with Genesis procedural requirements, including those set forth in the Operating Procedures Manual.
  • Be knowledgeable of local, state and federal laws, regulations and policies as related to the work at Genesis.
  • Prepare water, coffee, snacks for guests, when available.
  • Ensure residents clean (including mopping, sweeping, wipe down) of facility bathrooms, sleeping area, and common areas as assigned.
  • Assist janitorial staff with simple tasks as needed and assigned by the House Manager.
  • Perform other duties as requested.
 Required Skills:
  • Ability to implement and utilize limit setting techniques and appropriate boundaries.
  • Strong interpersonal and management skills
  • Extensive knowledge of community resources
  • Ability to work independently and relate to all levels of the organization
  • Basic proficiency with e-mail and Microsoft Office tools such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use new software programs with basic training
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), conflict resolution, supervisory skills
  • Ability to be flexible, open and responsive to crisis management
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a culturally diverse population of residents, family and community members
 Education and Experience:
  • HS Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in a public contact environment or customer service
  • Experience in human or social services, preferably in a shelter/residential preferred
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to rapidly travel over uneven surfaces, up and down steps, up and down ramps and to climb stepladders, as necessary to perform duties of the position.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to lift up to 45 lbs.
